The Cincinnati Reds are the oldest professional baseball team in the Major Leagues. They began as the Cincinnati Red Stockings in 1881 because, yes, you guessed it, they wore red stockings with their uniforms. Eventually they changed the name to Redlegs, and soon after shortened that to just Reds.

Thanks to the Red Scare of the 1950s, the team decided to go back to being called the Cincinnati Redlegs so as not to be associated with the commies. With the apparent threat of nuclear annihilation no longer a risk to the great people of Cincinnati in 1961, they switched back to the Reds as they've been ever since.
